Visual field advantage in the perception of audiovisual speech segments
نویسندگان
چکیده
Research has shown that speech segment perception is predominantly a function of the left hemisphere. The aim of this study is to determine if the visual field in which visual speech is presented affects the audiovisual percept. Results show increased audiovisual fusion in the right visual field and exclude that the difference was a result of facial asymmetry. Findings indicate more efficient early audiovisual processing in the right visual field, likely associated with early left hemisphere brain functions for speech segments.

Audiovisual processing of Lombard speech
Perception results are presented that address the role of Lombard speech in auditory and audiovisual speech perception. Basically, visual enhancement neutralizes the advantage of Lombard speech observed for auditory perception. It remains an open question whether or not Lombard speech is preferable for perception studies of speech in noise.
متن کاملCross-Modal Prediction in Speech Perception
Speech perception often benefits from vision of the speaker's lip movements when they are available. One potential mechanism underlying this reported gain in perception arising from audio-visual integration is on-line prediction. In this study we address whether the preceding speech context in a single modality can improve audiovisual processing and whether this improvement is based on on-line ...
متن کاملThe role of visual spatial attention in audiovisual speech perception
Auditory and visual information is integrated when perceiving speech, as evidenced by the McGurk effect in which viewing an incongruent talking face categorically alters auditory speech perception. Audiovisual integration in speech perception has long been considered automatic and pre-attentive but recent reports have challenged this view. Here we study the effect of visual spatial attention on...
متن کاملMultisensory and sensorimotor interactions in speech perception
This research topic presents speech as a natural, well-learned, multisensory communication signal, processed by multiple mechanisms. Reflecting the general status of the field, most articles focus on audiovisual speech perception and many utilize the McGurk effect, which arises when discrepant visual and auditory speech stimuli are presented (McGurk and MacDonald, 1976). Tiippana (2014) argues ...
متن کاملSome behavioral and neurobiological constraints on theories of audiovisual speech integration: a review and suggestions for new directions.
Summerfield (1987) proposed several accounts of audiovisual speech perception, a field of research that has burgeoned in recent years. The proposed accounts included the integration of discrete phonetic features, vectors describing the values of independent acoustical and optical parameters, the filter function of the vocal tract, and articulatory dynamics of the vocal tract. The latter two ac...
